Albert Leon Bertram, 85, of Simpsonville, MD, formerly of Gorin, died Monday, August 21, 2023 at the Kline Hospice House in Mt. Airy, MD.

He was born the son of Nelson and Etsil (Cunningham) Bertram on February 20, 1938 at the family farm in Gorin.

Albert was a 1955 graduate of Wyaconda High School. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in chemistry and the University of Maryland in chemical engineering.

He entered the United States Army in 1961, where he served in active duty until 1963, then continued his military service with the Army reserves for another sixteen years. During his eighteen years of service Albert earned the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Frederick Bertram; and a great nephew, Drew Bertram.

He is survived by his sister-in-law Virgina (Hyde) Bertram of Gorin, his nieces and nephew: Tina (Kirk) Townsend of Wyaconda, Tracy (Leslie) Waterman of Donnellson, IA, and Timothy (Melissa) Bertram of Kahoka; great nieces and nephews: Bradley (Marci) Waterman of Marion, IA, Joshua (Taylar) Townsend of Arbela, Taylor (Cole) Courtney of Argyle, IA, Danielle Townsend of Wyaconda and Chloe Bertram of Kahoka; four great-great nieces and nephews. Also surviving are many cousins and friends who were like family.

  1. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Bertram family. I had the pleasure of meeting Albert Bertram a few times. One such time comes to mind, He came to Gorin School to see his niece, Tina. He was sitting at the picnic table outside the Gorin School building.

    Mr. Bertram was a very knowledgeable man. I enjoyed sitting there listening to the stories he told. I am thankful that I had the pleasure of knowing Albert Bertram.

  3. Dear Tim Bertram, thank you for your note arrived today, Feb. 26, 2024 by USPS mail — to Bev & myself, and about Al.. (Your wrote when you came recently across our Christmas 2023 card to Al, sent as we did not know he had died..) Please then accept our belated condolences for his passing plus a remembrance here of his significant contributions in my ultrasonics lab at Penn State in the late 1970s and early 1980s when and where he served as a materials test engineer as a visiting scientist from his home base then of NWSC located then in White Oak, MD..
